Reflection in the mirror

Good morning, it has been exactly one year since I retired from being a firefighter. For those that know me know that it was not just a career, but a major part of who I have become over the years. Growing up I ate, breathed, and slept fire department, just talk to my family. Many family events were missed as a result of my choosen way of life, which sometimes were not always understood but always accepted.
   As I looked in the mirror this morning I though about the reasons, some of which out weighed continueing my career. As I watch the roll reversal between my father and I, deep down I know that being there for both of my parents at this time is by far the right choice.
  In my heart I will forever be the the fireman, a man that considered himself very lucky to have the chance to not only be a part of something amazing, but a man that learned how important life itself truely is. I am very greatful to those that I not only taught me, but kept me safe. I hope that I was able to return the favor.
   As i bring this to a close for today I know that even though one of my passions in life has changed, it will be ok, for I know that my creative passions will fill that space and will help me to become the long awaited craftsman that I have deep down inside.

The feat

Well friday has arrived and so has more rain. A good day to work on finishing estimates and get more time on the unfinished projects. Going to try the new design program which for those that know me it will be a feat in it's self. Never been very good with the computer thing but I know that I need to keep progress going if I want to reach my goal.
  Time to get moving a lot to accomplish in a short time, doctor's appointment today. I believe that they are going to saw me in half and count my rings today. As long as they do not throw away the two pieces everything should be good. Well enough chatter, have a great weekend!!

Good morning, it has been over a month since I last posted.Very sorry to those that follow, life has been very busy and time has definitely been a factor. Still in catch up mode which I will probably be in for a long, long time. I was able to complete a project that was sitting for awhile, I create a giant picture frame out of some douglas fir for a flag of heroes. It was for station #10 my final station that I worked out of.
   Well, onto other items still trying to raise the money for my timber shop, very slow process. It will HAPPEN!! The very stubborn individual that I am is not going to let money stop creativity from taking place.With that said it is time to be working on business so hopefully I can be back to keep you informed in the very near future, so until then be waiting because there is some great things on the horizon!!!!

The process

Good morning, it has been almost three and a half weeks since I last posted. So many things have been going on that there just have not been enough hours in a day. Some of the activities were good, mixed however with a few that were not. It just reaffirms just how important that life should be looked upon as a gift, no matter who you are or what you do!
  I am off my soapbox now, back to where things are going. Still working very hard at trying to get caught up on all of the many things that need attention. It is a very slow process but as they say slow and steady wins the race and I know that I can!!
Well it is another crazy busy day ahead, and it is time to get to my list. Until the next time.....

Timber Frame Tuesday: Striving for perfection

   Good morning, it has been a few weeks since I last posted. Today if you follow is Timber Frame tuesday. My topic is about striving for perfection. An area which I try very hard to succeed at. The Timber frame world is one of passion, drive, and creative imagination. All of which brings you back to striving for perfection.
  As I slowly enter this new world I hope that I can bring out the drive, the creative imagination and passion that the world of timber framing has to offer. Hopefully some day someone will look at my work and say WOW and then say I know who did that!
  When that moment arrives I know that striving for perfection will be worth it!!!

Just saying

Good morning, Here we are with another full week of things to do. Lots of work going to take place but also a little fun. D.C is in the mix and a little time will be dedicated to enjoying a food show. It is a unique event that I have gotten the pleasure of enjoying in the past.
  Just keep a watchful ear out though, in addition to the fun my saws will be talking up a storm, kind of like the owner. Just saying!!

Good morning, another busy day ahead. Lots and lots of rain rolled thru the area last night and hopefully it was helpful. As I sit here writing this blog today my thoughts turn to what needs to be accomplished. Just when you think the list in your head is going to be done, more items present themselves that makes for another challenging day!
  All is good though and having something move forward is definitely worth the challenge!! So I better get a move on and keep making progress. Have a wonderful weekend, be safe and enjoy. Talk with everyone in the future.

Good morning,  a week and a half has passed sinced I last posted. There was a tremendous amount of activity taking place. A new phone entered the picture { a droid incredible } and for those that know me, it is going to take awhile to get comfortable with all that it can do, so I hope that those that communicate with me will understand. PROGRESS!!!
   Well it is time to move, another very busy day ahead but it just brings things that much closer to making the shop happen, so off I go to get things done.

Timber Frame Tuesday: Structural Insulated Panels

Good morning and another tuesday has arrived. Last week I spoke about hybrids, so to keep it consistent with the direction I will talk about SIP'S, otherwise known as structural insulated panels. The panels are a phenominal invention. They have many uses and were created specifically with the timber frame industry in mind.
   They are available in a variety sizes and even styles. Some are set up with so that electrical and plumbing can be run thru them without disturbing the inner core. For those that build they offer an alternative to stick framing and can be a cost effective method to put up a shell.
  There are classes available that teach the best method and best utilization of the SIP'S for the building industry.
  So as I have stated in previous blogs, it falls back to homework and research and really great planning when it comes down to creating your dream!! Until tommorrow....

Busy Day

Good morning, a plethera of activity is about to get underway this week. A new furnace and air conditioner are getting installed today, hopefully it will be a smooth transition. The week has many more activities also planned, from tile work to painting to just being busy. So things are getting underway and I am needed to answer questions so until we talk again......!!

Log Jamz: Wiring

Good morning, It is thursday and time for log jamz. My topic for today is wiring. When building a log home there are several different approaches to running your electrical systems to your new home. Design is a very big factor. When you first start your project is is a very wise idea to have a plan on paper as to where all the wiring systems are going to go through out your home.
  Some homes will create a false panel and run the wiring behind a baseboard, others will predrill each log so as to have a cleaner look. Either methods are acceptable.
  It is a very wise thing to find an electrician with log home experience because all the little factors that can go along with doing such a project.The builder and the electrician will be coordinating the process together. The process starts once the ground as been broken. Well for now i will say goodbye until tommorrow...

Hustle

  Wednesday already, hope that everyone is having a good start so far this morning. Patiently awaiting an answer from a proposal to finish a log house project, keeping very busy with little things until the real work pops back into the picture.
   Steadily working towards the dream of building the timber frame shop, hustle seems to be the name of the game. Incredibly busy day ahead so for now I will say have a great day until tommorrow!!

Timber Frame Tuesday: Hybrids

Good morning, Well it is tuesday and time to talk about timber frames. Today's topic is hybrids. For those that are not familar with the term hybrid, it in layman's terms is a combination of conventional building that incoporates some timber frame features. For those that would like effect of a timber frame but cannot budget a full frame, it allows you to have some of the features. Most common is to have a great room with a timber truss effect.
  Usually the general contractor will combine the stick frame or panelized home with these features for an open floor plan. Well off to finish more proposals and other items for today, so until tommorrow.....

Log Jamz: Additions

 Good morning, Well another thursday has arrived and for those that follow my little blog, know that it is log jamz thursday. As I sit here deciding what to write about the subject of log additions comes to mind.
   For those that own a log home and want to add to it, a certain degree of challenges may arise.
   Questions that need to be asked are such things as do I use full logs or log siding? Do I have any special challenges that I will face when adding to my existing log home. How long of a process am I looking at to do my project? Do I need a builder that specializes in log additions or is it ok to just use a general contractor?
  These are just a few of the questions to put into your mind when making a decision to add to your home, there many questions that come about in this process and we will talk about them over time, so until tommorrow.........

What a concept

  Good morning on this sunny wednesday, hope that all is well for everyone. Another day of details for the estimates that I need to complete and then onto working on some projects.
  Ten years ago today at this very time I broke my back building an addition, on my brother's birthday no less. Since then I have been fracture free and intend on keeping it that way.
  Robin Williams said it best { REALITY WHAT A CONCEPT!!! } So I am going to wish my brother a happy birthday and get to work. Until tommorrow........

The Aniversary

Good morning, had a great weekend with family and friends celebrating my parent's 50th. A special thanks to the family and friends that flew across the country to be at the event. It was more than greatly appreciated.Thank you also the fine people of the Manor Tavern for the great service, and finally to my photography friend Rach, excellent JOB!!!

log Jamz: note to self

Good morning, hope that you had a great wednesday. As promised I have another addition of Log Jamz, I know that you have been on the edge of your seat waiting in anticipation.
  Well, you have already noted that I have talked about the weather  and it's affect on your log home, now I am going to bring up sunshine, which this week seems to be eluding everyone for the most part.
  Just like rain and snow the sunshine can have an effect on your log home if not properly protected. so with that in mind make a note to self and keep your log home sealed and or stained for good protection from the rays. Your logs will thank you!!

Keep it moving

  Another rainy day, but work goes on! Finishing up some work on some 6x6 timbers and hopefully be able to put them in place in the not to distant future. While I am waiting for good weather there still will be lots of activity.
huge weekend planned lots of relatives, so a couple of more days of preparation have to be fit in. So it is after 8.00am time to keep it moving, Tommorrow is another Log Jamz so I hope that you will be on the edge of your seat with anticipation!!

Timber Frame Tuesday: Lap joints

 Good morning, it is a rainy timber frame tuesday, but work goes forward. I have been creating lap joints on 6x6 timbers to frame out an area for a playhouse. It is a slow process but it will make the finished product have a cleaner look.
  So as I sit here writing a few words I will map out the rest of the day and hopefully the weather will be good to me.
  For those that do not know what a lap joint is, it is when two pieces of timber have had equal amounts of material removed so that they can overlap and remain as one solid connection between two timbers that gives the appearance of one. Until tommorrow........

Log Jamz: The path

  It is thursday a beautiful may morning, the kind of day that you want to wake up to each and everyday. These are the kind of days that those who want the log home lifestyle to be like. So with that said the dream of such a lifestyle is out there, and i am going to help those of you to find it within yourselves.
  My job is to help you find that path, one that will make the process of log home construction a little easier to understand and guide you to fullfill your dream in the process.
  As i have stated in other additions of Log Jamz the key falls to one major thing and that is to form a plan. This as with other things in life will help keep the problems at a minimum. Next week in my Log Jamz addition I will provide details that will open you up to all the posibilities.......

Timber Frame Tuesday: Hand Tools

 Good morning, hope that all is well. Again it is timber frame tuesday and the topic is hand tools.
As most anyone that knows me, I am a tool junkie and my belief is that you can never have enough good tools to do the job.
  When it comes down to your timber frame hand tools several things should come to mind. First choose a good quality tool, second if you are going to use these tools frequently they need to be comfortable in your hands. Third they should be properly maintained and cared for. A sharp chisel is very important when working with timber. Finally learn to use them in a proper manor and they should last you a very long time.

Log Jamz: Financing

  Good morning, well we are back to another Log Jamz thursday. It is time to talk financing!
Most often than not the average individual will need to borrow money to build their dream. Most people who have experienced either the purchase or the building of a home know that it can be an involved process.
   Log home costruction loans are also just as involved and to a degree maybe even more so. Most banking facilities do not process very many if any at all loans for log home purchase or construction depending on the area that the log home is to be located.
  For those that might get discouraged by this do not!! It falls back you the buyer or the builder educating the facility about the home. Most loan approvals for such a home are not just based on a credit approval. There are facilities that specialize in loans for such homes and can be found via the internet, trade shows, and even through trade magazines which offers information about the process.
  So with that said it is up to you to be the expert about your new home, or at the very least have someone that can guide you through the process. More to follow down the road!!

Take a look

Tuesday morning, which means that today's topic is timber frames. This is a subject that is very near and dear to my heart. Anyone that has known me any length of time will tell you how much that I have talked about being a timber framer.
  As I slowly intergrate myself into the industry my goals are to become as good as the many fine outfits out there. When i achieve that goal i know that the creativity inside will allow me to be the best that i can be and that all the blood, sweat, and frustration will all be worth it.
   I hope that everyone will follow my journey over time, and that i will do my fellow framers proud!

Log Jamz : Maintenance

  Well it is thursday, and another Log Jamz is in order. In the last couple of weeks i have talked about locations, subs, suppliers and the like. Today's topic is going to be upkeep. Just like most homes a log home will need general maintenance to stay a healthy home.
  Such things to consider are exterior staining, checking for water damage, carpenter bees { and just so you know they don't buzz around with little hammers doing repairs! } and possible investation from termits. All of the following items can be taken care of by setting up a routine maintenance schedule for yourself to keep your log home healthly.

Well it is already the middle of the week. The weather cannot seem to make up it's mind but forward progress does not stand in the way of rain. Flexiblity will be the key to making progress happen, so today will be a catch up day in my little world, estimates,  errands, multi=tasking as usual.

Timber Frame Tuesday: The story

Good morning, it is Timber Frame tuesday and as promised i would provide some information about the world of timber framing. Most people do not realize just how much, or how long timber framing has been in existance.
  From castles in Europe, to temples in Japan, to barns in New England timber framing has had an impact on the ways that modern man builds and survives!
  Over time I will provide an indepth look at timber framing, it's history, information about the craft,
and a general knowledge to aid those in search of the dream of having a timber frame. Until then keep a watchful eye out for there will be more to follow.

Kit Suppliers

Good morning and it is thursday which means it is time for my weekly addition to Log Jamz.
I so far have touched on the subjects of sub-contractors, research, and location. Today i briefly speak about kit suppliers.
  Kit suppliers can be in several forms, from small operations with several people up to large factories that produce volume.
  Either type can be suitable depending on the needs of the client. There are several really great ways to start the process of finding a package that is to your desire.
 First the trade magazines such as Log Home Living, Timber Homes. The internet which is where there are many companies doing their advertising. Another way to find great information are the trade shows that have representatives on hand to help you.
  Hope that this will be of assistance in making a great choice for your future!! More to follow!

Loose ends

    It is wednesday already, time flies. All the loose ends are slowly but surely falling into place and in the next few weeks a timber project will begin. With that said since every thursday has been deemed Log Jamz thursday, I will be dedicating a day to detailed timber frame information.

Log Jamz: Sub- Contractors

Well it has made it back to thusday again, which means time for more log jamz. Today's topic will be sub-contractors. When choosing a sub-contractor for your project there are a few things to look into to aid in making a proper choice.
  One of the first items would be reputation, does the sub work for alot of different builders or does the sub have a consistent group that they have worked for a long period? How long has the sub been in business? Have they done specialized work on either log or timber frame homes?
  Above are just a few things to think about, over time i will provide much more information and some answers that are inline with what the industry as a whole feels are the best for those wanting a log or timber frame home!

Log Jamz Location

  Good morning, last week on log jamz i talked about research. Today I will briefly hit on the subject of location, location, location in conjunction with the type of package or kit that may be used.
  As with everything that I write it is subject to your own personal interpretation of the information provided.
  When choosing a kit for your plot of land, one must consider the type of wood species utilized for the log package. Each area has it's own set of conditions that could affect the life of the home. Examples would be items like how much rain does the area receive, does the area have any known infestation problems. Lastly for now does the area have dramatic climate changes. These are just a few things to consider, more to follow........!

Well it is friday and a great day lies ahead. Today's agenda is to make DUST!
Projects are on the move and very soon there will be photos available for everyone to see. It has been a long process but one that should be worth the wait.
   If you listen carefully in the distance you might just hear a saw buzzing, dust a flying,  and work being done!

log jamz Research

Well it is Log Jamz thursday. hope that all is well. As time progresses this little segment of my blog will go into the log home world.
Today's topic is research. When think about build a home any home it is always important to do research. When it comes down to log homes this definitely is true. Everyone that is considering building such a home needs to do a fair amount of just that research.
 First would be to ask yourself questions such as what style am i looking? What type of logs to use?
  Where to i intend on putting up such a home? Budget, Budget, Budget!! Where do i find a builder or do i do it myself.
  These are just a few of the important questions that need to be asked. There will be more to follow and more importantly, i will provide you with information that will aid you to making good decisions to help you realize your dream!!

The future

Well it is the middle of the week already, time flys by quicker than you can imagine.
For those that follow my little blog as you have seen so far i want to have some fun with this. Very very soon i will be including information about the nature about what i am doing with the company and future plans.

The answers??

So you probably are wondering if there are answers to my questions from yesterday. The answer would be yes, but when it comes down to it only those that truely understand creativity will be able find the truth behind if a tree falls.
  As for me i will be ever moving forward with my goal of being the craftsman and unleasing the more and more as each day passes. keep an eye out because as i have said before great things are on the horizon and LOOK OUT!!

If a tree falls

If a tree falls does it mean that everything is done? If a tree falls does it make a sound? If a tree falls should you leave it alone? If a tree falls does it's value change? If a tree falls should you do anything about it? If a tree falls where do you turn for the answers to these pressing questions? Finally if a tree falls what's next?

Dust a flying

As most of you have probably seen so far if you are following my blog, i have a theme.
Doing this is very much a new animal to me but i fully intent on making it work.{ the stubborn little irishman thing}I truely hope that the content that i put out there entertains, informs and educates everyone about my little world.

As i sit here thinking about what to say today i realize that sometimes that when it comes to creativity you just have to let it happen and not wonder how it did. If you can believe that will be, then it will. Today a plethera of activity will be happening. Saw dust is a major item on today's agenda. Going to be wrapping up a project this week and very excited about the outcome. Hope that all is well on this bright sunny day.

Another great day ahead. Progress is happening saw dust is flying and projects are again underway!!
In the near future i will be posting an addition to blog which i will be calling Log Jamz, it will talk about log home construction and the lifestyle that comes with it.

spring day

It has been a few days since I last posted, hope that all is well for everyone out there. If you listen you can hear the sounds of saws a buzzing, hammers a nailing and work getting done. It is dust making time and spring has arrived!!

    note to self: always hug your trees before you cut them down!
